CHF International - Indonesia

CHF International has been working in Indonesia since 1995, when it began a series of activities aimed to improve the conditions of low-income populations through improved access to housing and credit. However, immediately following the earthquake-tsunami that devastated coastal areas of Aceh province on December 26, 2004, our efforts substantially increased. CHF immediately began assistance in recovery and revitalization, focusing efforts on the restoration of housing, economic infrastructure (roads, public markets, etc.), community health services (water supply/sanitation systems, health centers, etc.), and a wide range of livelihoods activities (targeting the fishing industry, handicrafts sector, agriculture, and building trades).

CHF International's mission is to be a catalyst for long-lasting positive change in low- and moderate-income communities around the world, helping them to improve their social, economic and environmental conditions.

Following the May 27, 2006 earthquake that struck central Java, CHF again responded immediately. This initially involved the provision of emergency medical assistance and relief supplies, and later expanded to the provision of assistance in the areas of housing, water supply and sanitation, and community-based economic development.

Regardless of the setting, CHF International’s response to needs in Indonesian communities is driven by adherence to very basic principles of assistance. Such principles include: respect for local history and customs; an appreciation that no intervention will succeed without strong local participation and “buy-in”; and ensuring that we remain transparency and accountability. CHF likewise recognizes that our existence depends on the support and trust of private individuals, foundations, and donors—and that we are the ultimate stewards of such support and trust.
