The AusAID funded Health Markets Program (HMP) launched its Incentive Fund on July 28 2009 in Makassar. The Incentive Fund consists of three elements – testing and monitoring for the presence of Avian Influenza (AI) and E.Coli at Sambung Jawa and Panakkukang, a market focused opportunity for managers to access funds to strengthen bio security at markets throughout Makassar and a vendor focused incentive fund that will support behavior change amongst vendors of all markets in Makassar.

The workshop was officially opened by Pak Anis Z. Kama, Regional Secretary of Makassar city as a representative of Mayor of Makassar and Kerri Amos, Program Director of HMP. In his speech, Pak Anis remarked that the incentive fund provided an opportunity to improve bio security in Makassar markets and encouraged participation from the markets managers. “All market managers must help the city municipality of Makassar realize Healthy Market Program in Makassar” he said.
The launch was also attended by Dr Wan Alkadri, S.Si., M.Sc., Ministry of Health of Government of Indonesia, who delivered presentation on Healthy Market Initiatives in Indonesia. Presentations on AI were provided to the participants as well as explanation on the process for application for funding. The options for market improvements are open but the applicants must be able to show how they contribute to bio-security in the market place. Applications must also accompany confirmation that the markets conducted a clean up day and rest period, and must be submitted on 4 September with expected implementation to commence in October.
