On August 9 2009, the AusAid funded South Sulawesi Healthy Market Program (HMP) in Makassar conducted a Market Clean Up Day at Sambung Jawa. Both the market community (vendors, market management, and PD Pasar) and HMP counterparts (Bappeda, Dinkes, BPOM, DKKP, Disperindag) participated in organizing the event.

The purpose of these activities are to promote better cleaning in the markets with a minimum four hour rest time and to raise awareness in the market community about the “healthy markets initiative”, avian influenza (AI) and how to prevent the spread of AI. Activities on the day included exhibition of health promotion materials, proper hand-washing techniques, how to select a healthy 
Vendors and Students assist in the clean up carcass, quizzes on AI and Healthy Market, presentation on the Study Tour to Thailand and local community-based competitions (tug of war, solo singing, kiosk cleanliness, balloon dance, eating cracker, duo sack race, marble run, arrange jumbling words). Students from the faculty of Public Health and Nature Lovers Club of Hasanuddin University, market management staff and CHF staff conducted the days activities. Two further events will be organized for Pannakukkang and SJ to reinforce the message on how to maintain a healthy market.
