The market, destroyed by the December 2004 earthquake/tsunami, is central to the community of Meureudu. It has been reconstructed by CHF under the American Red Cross-funded Healthy Markets Program. The Meureudu Fish Market took 5 months to construct, and will benefit more than 2500 people in the community. The market design includes heavy drainage troughs and direct hosing water sources, in order to ensure a clean and healthy market space, for vendors and customers alike. As part of the Healthy Markets Program, vendors are also trained in proper sanitation and safety procedures.

Representatives of CHF International/Indonesia, the American Red Cross, and the community of Meureudu cut the ribbon to officially open the reconstructed Mereudu Fish Market

Tom White, Chief of Party of CHF International/Indonesia’s program in Naggroe Aceh Darussalam said, “We are very pleased with the quality of the construction and the level of community support, and we’re especially happy to have had the opportunity to work on this market, given its location and its centrality to the community of Meureudu.”
