CHF International - Indonesia / JRF

On January 8, 2007, CHF International received approximately $2.3 million USD in funding support from the multi-donor Java Reconstruction Fund (JRF), administered by the World Bank, for provision of transitional shelter assistance to the earthquake-affected areas of Yogyakarta and Central Java. Under this program, CHF is providing 8,000 durable shelters (Roof Structure Kits, or RSKs) to families whose homes were heavily damaged or destroyed in the May 27, 2006 earthquake and who still do not have adequate shelter.

The JRF program builds upon CHF’s success of our previous USAID/OFDA funded Transitional Shelter Program, using the same community-based approach and methodologies. CHF is using our proven demand-driven approach to assistance provision, and continuing to work with local universities, particularly the University of Gadjah Mada (UGM), in utilizing student volunteers from the architecture and engineering departments to provide daily outreach, monitoring, and technical assistance in the field. Under the JRF-supported program, shelter kits are prefabricated at a central production facility located in Bantul, and then shipped as a complete kit to beneficiary communities. CHF construction teams then work with community members and skilled laborers to erect the shelter frame and roof; beneficiary households and gotong royong groups then work to complete the shelters individually, making them unique and allowing beneficiary families to modify the shelter to suit their needs.

As of February 15, 2007, CHF has prefabricated over 1,000 shelters and erected approximately 400 shelters in communities located throughout Bantul, DIY, and Klaten, Central Java.
